Makeup Tips to Ensure You Look Flawless This Holiday Season

The holidays are upon us and that means quality time with family and friends and outfits galore. You want to make sure you look your best for all the holiday parties and get-togethers, and I’m here to help you make sure your makeup is on point.

Here are my top favorite tips for making sure your makeup is holiday ready!

Don’t forget the sunscreen!

I know it’s cold outside, but the sun can still do damage to your skin via UV rays. Make sure you apply sunscreen before putting on any foundation or concealer. Trust me, you’ll thank me later when you don’t have any fine lines or wrinkles.

The Prep Step

Make sure your skin is hydrated by drinking lots of water and using a face cream that fits your skin type. I like to use the Drunken Elephant Polypeptide Firming Moisturizer for an extra boost. This also acts as a primer so that your makeup will have something to grip onto and will last all day long. If you prefer adding a primer to your routine, the Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base Priming Moisturizer is a current favorite.

A good primer will help your foundation go on smoothly and last all day long. No one wants their makeup wiping off their face halfway through your hug with Uncle Bob.

Give Your Makeup Up All Day Staying Power

Set your makeup so it lasts all night long! Whether you’re using powder or liquid foundation, setting spray will help keep your makeup in place all day long—no touch-ups necessary!

My holy grail setting spray is the Lancôme Fix It Forget It Setting Spray. I always make sure to spray my face with this before I leave the house and my makeup stays put no matter how many cups of eggnog I drink!

Use waterproof mascara and eyeliner for those holiday tears

Waterproof mascara and eyeliner are essential for keeping your makeup intact when tears start flowing during emotional family gatherings. No one wants raccoon eyes in their holiday photos!

Play up your eyes

The holidays are all about sparkle and shimmer, so have fun with your eye makeup! If you usually go for a neutral eyeshadow, now is the time to experiment with some brighter colors. Metallics are also big this season. And don’t forget the falsies! Thick, full lashes will really make your eyes stand out. Just make sure to apply them carefully so you don’t end up with glue all over your eyelids.

Rock a bold lip color

Bold lips are always in style but they’re especially festive during the holidays. If you don’t normally wear color on your lips, start with a stain or tinted balm before moving on to full-on lipstick. And if you’re not sure what color to choose, red is always a classic holiday shade.

For holiday parties, I like to go for a nude or red lip because it goes well with any outfit and makes a statement without being too over-the-top. My current favorite nude lipstick is the MAC Cosmetics Lipstick in Velvet Teddy and my favorite red lipstick is the MAC Cosmetics Lipstick in Ruby Woo.

Liven Up Your Face

A pop of color on the cheeks always looks nice for the holidays and brings life to your face. I like to use either a powder or liquid blush because it gives a really natural flush of color to the cheeks. The Nars Blush in Orgasm is one of my all-time favorites because it gives you a really pretty peachy pink color that would look good on any skin tone!

Get a professional

No time to perfect your look? Consider getting your makeup done professionally. There are lots of great beauty salons and spas that offer holiday specials on makeup applications. This is perfect if you have an event like a Christmas party or New Year’s Eve gala to attend. The professionals will be able to give you the exact look you want while saving you time and hassle.

Do a test run before the big day

Make sure you try out your holiday party look before the actual event so that you have time to make any necessary changes. Nothing is worse than being unhappy with your appearance the day of, darling.

When it comes to holiday makeup, less is definitely more. You don’t want to look like you’re trying too hard. And by following these simple tips, you can be confident that your makeup will look amazing no matter where this holiday season takes you! So put on your best outfit, grab those designer purses, and get ready to take on the holidays in style!
